When I watch the judge shows on television, I am amazed at how some people dress for court. These people are appearing on national television and come to the show for a favorable decision in their case with cleavage showing and fat hanging out!

It is mind boggling that these litigants have no clue how to dress in court. When a person is appearing before someone with authority in their life that is wearing a black robe, isn't it fair to assume that one should wear something appropriate for the occasion?

Even priests have white robes for happy occasions and black outfits for daily or sad services. If the judge is wearing black, wouldn't a black suit be called for everyone else in attendance except the bailiff? Halter tops, hoop earrings, and jeans are not acceptable for a national television in court. Smacking gum is also way inappropriate. Any judge worth their salt will not allow gum in their court.

Granted, the dress code in court is unspoken and unwritten. But, all you have to do is look around you in any courtroom. Lawyers will dress defendants in business clothes defendants don't even own. They want them in attire they would never wear on the streets to give their clients credibility.

People should cover themselves in dark or muted colors for court. Their tattoos should never be exposed. Dress slacks are okay for women, but if skirts are worn, they should be knee-length. Blouses and dress shirts should be worn in muted colors. Tee shirts and baggy pant styles should be avoided.

Jewelry should be modest and tasteful. Makeup should be applied lightly. Women should never try to compete with the judge in style or fashion. It just will not bode well for the decision.

The whole idea is to dress business casual. Business will be conducted and litigants should appear ready and professional. Avoid tongue tacks, eyebrow studs, nose jewels, or lip studs. If ears are exposed, they should have only one small decoration on each. Men should probably avoid earrings in court.

Footwear should also be worn in dark or muted colors. They should be dress shoes for business. No athletic wear or sandals.

Knowing how to dress for court is critical when appearing in court. Judges and juries (if a jury trial) are observing and noting everything about you before court is in session to well after the decision is rendered. What you say, do, and wear at this time will impact your life for years. Give yourself a chance at a favorable ruling and dress for court appropriately.
